UP Paper LLC sources 100% of its fiber needs from recycled fiber markets primarily located in the Midwest region.
The blend of fiber used today is approximately 60% OCC (Old Corrugated Containers), by definition post-consumer recycled material, and 40% DLK (Double-Lined Kraft).
The Company seeks to procure fiber close to its customer ship-to locations to optimize backhauls. We are continuing to pursue longer-term supply agreements that can ensure supply base at reasonable costs.
Environmental
As a company located in Michigan’s pristine Upper Peninsula we understand our responsibility and the importance of protecting the environment in which we live. We take pride in our recycling which diverts 100,000 tons annually from landfills while producing paper products for everyday use. UP Paper LLC continually strives to protect our resources and environment. Since our start-up, thru conservation and reuse practices we have been able to reduce water consumption by 60%. We have reduced electrical consumption by converting all lighting fixtures to new high efficiency models. UP Paper LLC believes current and future investments in protecting the environment are considered a necessity in our company’s long term viability.
Recycling
UP Paper, a 100% recycled natural Kraft producer, utilizes post and pre consumer OCC and DLK from the Midwest Region. Through our use of recycled fiber, we reclaim material that would otherwise be destined for a landfill. Our raw material is obtained through local community collection efforts as well as larger corporate recycling partners.
When one ton of cardboard is recycled it saves:
- 46 gallons of oil (1.1 barrels)
- 390 kWh of energy
- 6.6 million BTU’s of energy
- 17 trees
- 7000 gallons of water
- 9 cubic yards of landfill space
Annually, we purchase 120,000 tons of recovered material. Saving 840 million gallons of water, 2 million trees and 132,000 barrels of oil.
